Currently VeriFone and Creative Mobile Technologies are the only two providers of POS equipment to the Taxi and Limousine Commission (TLC). Under NYC’s proposed pilot program however, taxis will be equipped with iPhones integrated to the taxi’s meter or iPad’s installed in the back seat. This opens up the market for app developers that want to leverage the data that taxis collect to create taxi related software.
“The data that's collected in taxicabs could be of real benefit to the industry, passengers and traffic engineers,” said TLC Commissioner David Yassky. “We want to realize as many of these benefits as possible. Realizing those benefits, however, is not cost-free.”
