Whether responding to consumers or to business customers, credit unions are finding that the convenience and/or mobility offered by remote deposit capture (RDC) is valued as an attractive option. In particular, it is important to those credit unions wanting to compete with other larger banking competitors, and those in less populated areas, where the distance to a branch may be greater.
Larry Middleman, president of CUSO CU Business Group LLC, a services provider to credit unions, points out that offering RDC presents several challenges:
"CUs should seek out one [a service provider] that offers good software in addition to operational and technical support and superb risk management controls. RDC does comes with its own set of risks including the possibility of duplicate deposits, check read errors and fraud."
Multiple third party service providers exist, presenting an implementation option that is easier for the credit union than integrating RDC directly within an online banking system.
