AI Agents Can Now Complete Purchases on Shopify

Shopify is letting shopping bots go the last mile and complete purchases on customers’ behalf. Its WebMCP protocol now supports checkout for eligible merchants, with transactions going through Shop Pay.

The e-commerce platform had already enabled browser-based AI agents to search a Shopify retailer’s inventory, identify relevant products, and add them to a cart. Now, buyers can authorize agents to submit and complete the transaction. Buyers will still need to step in for any actions that require explicit authentication.

The Home for Agentic Shopping

Checkout is one of the most complicated parts of an online transaction, involving sensitive payment information, authentication, and final authorization. Shopify’s agent-focused tools are designed to handle that part of the process, potentially giving merchants more confidence in letting AI agents transact on their sites.

“Shopify is making their platform agent-ready to position themselves to capture whatever business may be out there,” said Don Apgar, Director of Merchant Services at Javelin Strategy & Research. “This could be a significant advantage because as consumers deploy bots to do their shopping, the bots can only shop where merchants allow them to. Shopping bots will gravitate toward Shopify merchants knowing they are enabled there.”

“Ideally, this could shape the shopping behavior of consumer-enabled bots and tilt the agentic landscape in favor of Shopify merchants,” he said. “This begs the question of whether you can engender loyalty among early adopter bots the way you can with consumers. It remains to be seen whether early-mover advantages are sustainable or evaporate as soon as competing platforms are enabled.”

Partnering with Agents

Shopify had already announced plans to let Meta’s agent, Muse, browse Shopify-powered stores and complete purchases. That contrasts with Amazon, which blocked Muse from browsing its sites, citing security concerns.

Shopify is also partnering with Instinct, a startup that recently raised $1 billion in new funding. Calling itself the upscale bot, Instinct is developing a personal AI assistant designed to handle tasks such as making restaurant reservations, planning cross-country trips, and scheduling appointments.

The partnership points to a broader ambition for AI assistants—not just helping consumers find things, but taking action for them. For Shopify, that means making sure its merchants can participate when those actions involve a purchase.

“Like any new technology, you won’t know if customers will use it until there’s something for them to use,” Apgar said. “As Henry Ford famously said, ‘If I had asked the people what they wanted, they would have said a faster horse.’”
