American Express To Offer Merchant Discounts Via Foursquare

American Express continues to take a leadership role in the use of social media, both to drive new business and add value to cardmembers.

The two companies are piloting the service at the annual South by Southwest Interactive tech-fest that is set to take place in Austin, Texas later this week. Sixty merchants have been lined up to offer a special ‘spend $5 save $5’ promotion.

The article also notes that American Express is seeking a “senior social media manager, to coordinate the company’s strategy and activities across emerging client engagement channels,” a sign the social media channel is of growing long term importance. American Express’s OPEN Forum for its small business cardmembers is a notable early mover capability that has driven development of the social media channel.
