Barclaycard Signs Up to Wearable Payment Device Project

Customer relationship specialist Green 4 Solutions is being joined by Barclaycard to create a wearable device to be “one stop shop” for the sports and leisure industry, according to Mobile Payments Insider.

Barclaycard is stepping it up in technology in the sports sector to provide contactless payments inside and outside stadiums. They are also expected to experiment with social media check-ins, competitions and loyalty rewards.

“Wearable payment devices are becoming increasingly popular as they’re a fast, secure and easy way to pay,” said Mike Saunders, Managing Director for Digital Consumer Payments at Barclaycard in the Mobile Payments Insider story. “We can help sports clubs access new data sources to gain valuable insights into their customers’ behaviour by providing an integrated payment and ticketing solution. This will help venues looking to understand their customers better, grow loyalty and maximise revenues through a joined-up approach to technology.”

According to the article, Barclaycard trailed bPay at events such as Pride and British Summer Time in Hyde Park this summer and is looking to further develop the technology.

The Mercator Advisory Group looked at the future of wearable payments in their report, The Future Is Not in the Cards: Will ‘Wearable Payments’ Replace, Wallets?” published in January of 2014.
