Brightcove’s New Patent for Online Video Platform Technology

Video publishing platform Brightcove announced today that it has been awarded a patent for the technology underlying its video software offering. YouTube may be the most ubiquitous platform of choice for launching of videos into cyberspace, but it offers limited capability to manage the content, and always includes the risk of losing a viewer to being distracted by the YouTube “video virus” of the day. For customer service, for product information, and for advisory comments, video is rapidly gaining ground. According to Brightcove’s announcement:

“The invention relates to many aspects of online publishing and distribution of digital media, such as styleable player experiences, rights management, affiliate syndication, advertising policies and analytics…… More than 3,000 customers in more than 50 countries rely on the Brightcove online video platform to distribute and monetize video across PCs, smartphones, tablets, and connected TVs.”

Techcrunch’s Erik Schonfeld observed:

“Brightcove is now streaming 700 million videos a month, I have learned, which it believes would place it among the top five online video platforms on the web. That number is up from 400 million videos streams per month in March, 2010.…. In the past 6 months, Brightcove publishers uploaded as much video to it[s] servers as they did during the entire first five years of Brightcove’s existence.”

With the availability of much improved video management tools such as the Brightcove Video Platform, firms have the ability to create much more impact with online video content. Increasingly, they will take advantage of that capability.
