China Mobile, the world’s largest mobile network operator with nearly 700 million subscribers, announced its plan to introduce NFC mobile payments.
The carrier then plans to expand in partnership with payments network China UnionPay to fifty cities later in the year. In total, it aims to sell 10 million NFC phones in 2013.
China Mobile had intended to introduce its mobile payment services based on its own standard, which uses the 2.4Ghz radio frequency instead of the 15.56MHz standard adopted by NFC and the majority of other contactless payment services such as MasterCard’s PayPass and Visa’s payWave. But China has recently adopted a national standard for contactless mobile payments, the China UnionPay’s QuickPay standard. QuickPay uses the same frequency as NFC, MasterCard PayPass and Visa payWave and the like.
