JC Penney and Nordstrom Transitioning to Mobile POS System

JC Penney is introducing mobile POS devices in its stores this weekend. Ultimately, the retailer intends to replace all cash registers with mPOS devices by 2014.

Nordstrom currently has 6,000 mobile POS devices in its stores to provide a checkout method for their customers. By the end of the year, the handheld devices will be able to do everything a traditional register can do.

From a USA Today article:

“I believe the future of our point-of-sale systems is completely mobile,” [Jamie Nordstrom, president of the company’s online division] says. “It’s hard to know whether it’s in one year or five years because the technology is evolving so rapidly.”

Despite the desire to switch completely to mobile, Nordstrom will continue to accept cash for as long as their customers have a desire to use it.

The two retailers join several other merchants that have integrated mobile POS devices such as Apple, Costco and Sam’s Club.
