JPMorgan Expands JPM Coin to Ethereum for Tokenized Transfers

As an early adopter of digital assets, JPMorgan is now positioned to build on its substantial infrastructure. After bringing its USD-backed deposit token, JPM Coin (JPMD), to the Base blockchain last year, the bank is launching the institution-focused token on Ethereum.

Despite the “coin” in its name, JPMD is a unit of account for tokenized deposits—not a stablecoin. It represents deposits held at JPMorgan on a public blockchain, allowing institutional clients to make on-chain payments with greater speed and efficiency.

Bringing JPMD to Ethereum, one of the most established blockchains, could expand the token’s reach and potential use cases.

The Growing Distinction

This expansion highlights the growing distinction between stablecoins and tokenized deposits. While both represent fiat currency in digital form, stablecoins are typically issued by private companies and backed by reserves.

Tokenized deposits, by contrast, represent funds held at regulated banks, a key reason major banks have increasingly favored this approach. Several leading U.S. banks, including JPMorgan Chase, are planning to launch their own bank-led tokenized deposit network.

Streamlining Global Financial Services

Unlike some of its peers, JPMorgan has invested in digital assets for years. At the center of its efforts is Kinexys, one of the first blockchain platforms developed by a financial institution.

The platform has evolved to support a range of functions aimed at streamlining global financial services through digital assets, including bank-to-bank transfers and foreign exchange conversions. JPMorgan recently expanded Kinexys’ foreign exchange capabilities.

Last year, the bank also launched its first tokenized money-market fund on Ethereum through the platform. According to the Block, Kinexys has facilitated more than $4 trillion in transactions to date, with an average daily transaction volume of $7 billion.

As tokenized deposits offer institutions new ways to streamline and automate transfers, their use could continue to grow, especially among firms engaged in foreign exchange and treasury management. Integrating JPM Coin into these transactions could further expand Kinexys’ role in institutional payments and cross-border finance.
