Cambridge, Mass.-based start-up LevelUp is being integrated into a number of point-of-sale systems, including those provided by Revel Systems and NetPOS. This will result in LevelUp competing more directly with Square, which recently launched Square Register, an iPad-based POS system.

We believe our open API and our partnership with LevelUp is a win-win for both businesses and consumers alike,” said Chris Ciabarra, Revel’s Chief Technology Officer. “And while other solutions on the market are keeping a tight grip on their POS ecosystems and building everything internally, Revel Systems is committed to building open commerce and a shared environment that’s ripe for a multitude of beneficial partnerships for merchants – like this new integration with LevelUp.”

LevelUp provides an efficient way to make payments, encouraging consumers to make bigger purchases, and more often, when shopping with merchants who accept the mobile payment system. LevelUp charges merchants a 2% flat fee for each transaction. To accept payments, merchants are able to download a free app to their own mobile device, or LevelUp will rent them a scanner for $25.
