McDonald’s and Alipay Partner on Payments for 2,100 Restaurants in China

Customers looking to pay for their fast food at McDonalds more quickly will soon be able to use Alipay QR code mobile payment platform to pay for their food and drink in more than 2,100 restaurants across China. According to the companies, the first restaurants to accept Alipay will be in Shanghai but by March 2016 the national rollout should be complete.

Commenting on the deal, an Ant Financial spokesman (Alipay is part of the Ant Financial brand) said,

“It will take customers only two seconds to pay their meals at McDonald’s after introducing Alipay to its outlets by scanning the QR code in users’ Alipay. It will be more convenient and efficient for both customers and cashiers.”

With competition in the mobile payment space increasing and Alipay needing to deliver a broad acceptance and use case proposition to consumers, the deal with McDonalds makes a lot of sense for the company and follows similar deals with other retail service providers.
