Mobile Device-Based Shopping to Increase this Holiday Season

During the upcoming holiday season, 15 percent of Americans shopping online are expected to log on to a retailer’s website using a mobile device, according to findings by IBM. This will represent a growth of 12-15 percent from 2010 levels, an increase largely due to the proliferation of mobile devices such as smartphones and tablets in the United States..

“This November holiday season will mark the true advent of the post-PC era with consumers demonstrating a heightened interest in adding mobile devices to their holiday shopping arsenal,” said John Squire, Director, Product Management, Enterprise Marketing Management Group, IBM Industry Solutions. “In response, savvy retailers must invest in delivering hyper-personalized, smarter commerce shopping experiences that are capable of building loyalty through multiple channels with exceptionally relevant promotions, free shipping and more.”

In addition, IBM’s research found that Android use for mobile shopping will rival that of iPhone use for the first time, and that iPad users will be almost twice as likely as other mobile device users to make an actual purchase while shopping on their device.
