MasterCard and Commonwealth Bank in Australia have partnered with the Etihad Stadium in Melbourne to allow up to 5,000 fans to order food and drinks without ever having to leave their seats.

Using QkR mobile technology, fans can make their halftime food and beverage choices through an app, available on both iPhones and Android smartphones. All the fans have to do is download the app, scan or type in their seat number, choose from a menu and pay using the QkR digital wallet technology and stadium staff will bring the orders right to the customer’s seat.

From Finextra:

“QkR is one of the latest innovations in mobile payments technology,” says MasterCard Australia’s Head of Market Development and Innovation, Matt Barr. “Eradicating wait times in stadium queues is on every stadium-goer’s wish list – and MasterCard and QkR are making this a reality. The technology enhances real-world customer purchasing experiences, and supporting MasterCard’s vision of a world beyond cash.”

Although the technology will be limited to premium customers initially, if proven successful, the technology could be expanded to all stadium goers. QkR is just one of a series of recent mobile payment revolutions developed by the MasterCard labs and follows successful deployment of the technology in other consumer venues like cinemas with Hoyts Entertainment.

The rise of the smartphones and the new payment technologies that have accompanied them are making consumer experiences more enjoyable and have the potential to revolutionize match day experiences as evidenced by this trial at Etihad Stadium.
