The Gap is Going Mobile with Swagg for Its Gift Cards

Swagg, a mobile application offered by technology provider, Firethorn, will begin offering Gap mobile gift cards, according to a report from the Mobile Shopping Summit in San Francisco. The Gap will join a number of other companies, including American Apparel, Buckhead Life Restaurant Group, and 1800Flowers in offering virtual cards via mobile devices.

Consumers can purchase, personalize and exchange gift cards directly via their mobile device.
In addition, consumers can access account information, special offers and loyalty programs.

While Swagg is touting mobile as the wave of the future and predicting the demise of plastic gift cards, the assertion that consumers are “tired of carrying around all of their cards” is a little self-serving and over-optimistic. The demand for plastic gift cards will exist as long as there are consumers who want to give physical gifts and have something to put in a gift box or greeting card.
