Twitter continues to gain ground, especially as a means for short communications with consumers glued to their mobile phones. The Pew Research Center released new survey findings yesterday:

“13% of online adults use the status update service Twitter, which represents a significant increase from the 8% of online adults who identified themselves as Twitter users in November 2010. 95% of Twitter users own a mobile phone, and half of these users access the service on their handheld device.”

The full report includes more interesting details, including observations of significant adoption among older users ages 25 to 44. At the same time, Twitter itself has announced new functionality that should only serve to increase its utility. The Twitter search function has been reworked not only to accommodate photo search, but also to increase relevance. Within the social media domain, Twitter continues to build interesting and differentiated functionality.
