United Nations Agency Recommends that Postal Systems Offer Accounts

The Universal Postal Union, an agency of the United Nations, has called on central banks in countries around the world to help postal systems offer deposit accounts as a way to help people without bank accounts.

From Finextra:

The UN Universal Postal Union (UPU) says that with more than 660,000 outlets throughout the world, and significantly larger networks than banks in many developing countries, postal services can play a major role in boosting financial inclusion.

This idea has been discussed in the United States. Though the U.S. Postal Service has expressed doubts, it has been conducting experiments with prepaid cards that may ultimately fulfill a similar function.
