The Marie Curie Institute, Daffodil for Curie and othercancer research groups have lined up to accept contactless and NFC payments fordonations. Working with Ingenico, the non-profit cancer groups will letconsumers make donations by touching contactless enabled cards and NFCcontactless enabled phones against advertising screens.

Commenting on the announcement, Michel Léger, EVPInnovation, Ingenico Groups said, “We are delighted to support the CurieInstitute as part of this operation. With this initiative undertaken alongsideMedia Transports, we have transformed screens into fundraising instruments forthe benefit of a great cause. This solution represents a technologicalachievement and is a world first. It triggers new behaviors and represents amajor milestone in the history of the integration of payment acceptance intonew connected devices.”

While contactless payments are popularly used for transit,in the U.K. and Europe where contactless enabled POS terminals are broadlyavailable, consumers are increasing using their cards (and to a limited extenttheir phones) to make contactless payments at supermarkets, gas stations andother popular retailers, the addition of a donation feature will helpnon-profit groups survive, especially given that consumers are carrying lessand less cash each year.
