Chase Card Services, a division of JPMorgan Chase & Co., has tapped into gift card trends and new technology as part of a move to drive up transactions and improve customer loyalt. The company has launched a mobile gift card mall for iPhone users that lets them buy gift cards from a variety of stores and restaurants using their credit cards or rewards points that they have earned on their Chase cards. Although the company intends for this to be used for gift giving, that may only be the tip of the iceberg. It is easy to imagine a consumer using their rewards points to buy themselves a gift card that they can redeem instantly while actually in a store or restaurant. If Chase can tie in using the global positioning capabilities of the phone, or the voluntary reporting of locations by consumers using services such as Foursquare, could lead to interesting applications for offering coupons and other deals based on someone’s location.

Even now, though, the company is on the cutting edge by allowing people to buy and redeem gift cards via their mobile phones.

“Debuting just in time for the holiday shopping season, Chase GiftShelf is an innovative new gifting experience that is fun and easy to use. The free application facilitates mobile gift card purchases from an array of merchants and allows Chase credit card members to send a gift card to anyone instantly via text message or email. Multiple top retailers and restaurants are participating in this pilot launch, with additional retailers expected to join in soon.”

“The GiftShelf application lets consumers buy gift cards and send them via SMS or email. The application is available for free in Apple’s App Store.”
