Retail Gift Cards Association (RGCA) Shares PSA on Avoiding Gift Card Scams

Near-field communication (NFC) technology was once viewed as an emerging payments innovation, but it quickly became a foundational component of mobile commerce. As financial institutions, mobile operators, and technology providers raced to build contactless payment ecosystems, companies with expertise in security and credential management found themselves at the center of the opportunity.

One of those companies was American Banknote Corporation (ABnote), which announced the launch of a dedicated division focused on mobile NFC technology. The move reflected growing demand for secure mobile payment applications and the infrastructure required to support them. By investing in specialized NFC resources, ABnote positioned itself to help financial institutions, governments, and enterprises navigate the rapidly evolving mobile payments landscape.

The new division was established after several years of work in mobile NFC development and was tasked with advancing secure applications that integrate with ABnote’s Trusted Service Manager (TSM) platform. As contactless payments and mobile wallets gained momentum, TSM platforms became a critical component for securely provisioning and managing digital credentials across multiple devices and networks.

American Banknote Corporation (ABnote) has announced the launch of a new division dedicated to innovation in Mobile NFC technology. ABnote had been working on matters relating to mobile NFC for three years, but with the increase in mobile applications over the past nine months, they decided to add a dedicated division.

The main focus of the team will be to progress the development of secure mobile applications that work in conjunction with [their] Trusted Service Manager platform (TSM). ABnote TSM services will include mobile developments with a variety of handset platforms, EPINS, and distributed instant issuance across finance, government and corporate industry sectors.

ABnote will base the new division at their Ingleburn, Australia Center of Excellence.

ABnote’s decision to create a dedicated mobile NFC division highlighted the industry’s growing confidence in contactless payments and digital credential management. While the mobile payments market has evolved considerably since then, the need for secure provisioning, credential management, and trusted digital identities remains as important as ever.

The announcement also illustrates how companies that invested early in NFC infrastructure helped lay the groundwork for today’s mobile wallet ecosystem, where consumers increasingly expect secure, seamless, and contactless payment experiences.
