Consumers continue to want more convenience and immediacy in their shopping and payment experiences. So it’s no surprise that major Midwest grocer-supercenter Meijer has expanded its mobile app self-checkout, Shop & Scan, to its entire 200+ store network.

Even better, the app integrates other features to increase customer engagement with coupon offers and loyalty. Self-checkout systems of all shapes and sizes are becoming more visible across verticals including grocery, warehouse, and C-store. Could 2020 be a breakout year of both mobile and autonomous self-checkout for U.S. shoppers?

Supercenter retailer Meijer has wrapped up the deployment of Shop & Scan technology to all of its stores. Grand Rapids, Mich.-based Meijer said it completed the 15-month project yesterday with the rollout of the mobile checkout services to 44 stores in southeastern Michigan.

Shop & Scan made its debut in November 2017 in a pilot at 54 stores in Michigan, starting in the Grand Rapids area and then reaching to more locations during 2018. Most recently in 2019, the service was expanded to 23 stores in Chicago and northwestern Indiana in March and then to all 42 Meijer stores in Ohio in July.

“As we’ve rolled the program out in six states, the response has been incredibly enthusiastic,” Stephanie Brackenridge, director of customer experience at Meijer, said in a statement. “Customers have appreciated the ability to have a choice in shopping how they want, depending on how their day is going. Many are finding the opportunity to personalize their store visit with a cell phone is a great way to save time and help avoid lines.”

The most popular features, according to Brackenridge, are the integrated shopping list, running total and the ability to clip any available coupons from the mPerks rewards program for items scanned.
