The infrastructure for agentic shopping is in place, and there are signs that AI agents are beginning to use it.
According to a Chainalysis report, the x402 agentic payment protocol processed more than 138 million discrete transactions on the Base blockchain in Q3 2026, extending a period of growth.
Still, most of these transactions are micropayments. In the 16 months leading up to September, more than 87% of payments fell between one-hundredth of a cent and $0.10, the report found. While these small transactions account for relatively little value overall, they highlight of the potential advantages of agentic commerce—the ability to facilitate payments that would be impractical or uneconomical through traditional channels.
Processing transactions worth less than a dollar over conventional card network rails can be cost-prohibitive. By contrast, agentic protocols can leverage low-cost, always-on stablecoin transfers, opening up potential use cases and markets that traditional payment infrastructure may not serve efficiently.
What Agents Want
Chainalysis also examined what AI agents were purchasing. Many transactions involved information and digital services, including code review, financial intelligence, and API services. AI agents also paid for gaming and gambling services, as well as token issuance.
There report also found evidence of machine-to-machine payments, one of the use cases x402 protocol was developed to support. One of the largest categories of agentic transactions was model inference, in which AI models analyze new data to generate forecasts, insights, or decisions.
Signs of Maturation
The transaction volume is notable given findings from earlier this year that activity on the x402 protocol had yet to accelerate.
Launched with backing from crypto giant Coinbase, x402 aims to enable agents to exchange digital assets as seamlessly as they exchange data. Just months ago, however, daily transaction volumes remained low, and much of the activity appeared to stem from testing and trial runs.
The recent increase suggests that the infrastructure may be moving beyond early trials toward more sustained use. Whether that growth translates into widespread commercial adoption remains to be seen.
Agentic commerce is still in its early stages, with industry participants working to define and govern the emerging ecosystem. However, rising activity on x402 offers an indication that AI-driven payments are beginning to find practical applications.
