An international intelligence alliance is warning that artificial intelligence could soon enable highly capable cyberattacks against governments and businesses, potentially within months.

The Five Eyes intelligence alliance—comprising representatives from the U.S., the UK, Canada, Australia, and New Zealand—states that the speed of AI advancement is outpacing current cybersecurity defenses, leaving critical systems increasingly exposed. efforts will likely not be enough to protect us from rapidly improving AI models.

“The rapid pace of frontier AI development means cyber risk assumptions can become outdated in months, not years,” the joint statement reads. “Breaches will occur. Preparedness helps you contain them quickly and prevent escalation into major operational and financial crises.”

A Focus for Management

One core principle outlined in the document is that cybersecurity risk has shifted from a technical issue to a core leadership responsibility. According to The Five Eyes, cyber resilience is now a board-level concern, requiring executives to ensure organizations are prepared to withstand and respond effectively under real-world pressure.

“The warning from Five Eyes comes on the heels of years of warnings about looming risks associated with emerging cybersecurity vulnerabilities, such as Quantum Day, the hypothetical day when standard public-key encryption will be broken,” said Tracy Goldberg, Director of Cybersecurity at Javelin Strategy & Research. “While this new announcement specifically notes emerging AI risks related to accelerated network and software vulnerability discovery, it also serves as a warning for organizations across the board to shore up their cybersecurity resiliency strategies.”

“Exploitation of any weakness or vulnerability, including legacy encryption, will be enhanced and accelerated by hackers’ use of AI. AI-assisted discovery of vulnerabilities in banking applications and APIs is just the tip of the iceberg,” she said.

An Emerging Threat

Concerns about the potential risks posed by AI have been growing in recent months. In June, a group of cybersecurity researchers, AI entrepreneurs, and corporate executives signed an open letter urging the Trump administration to adopt a transparent, science-driven process for evaluating and managing AI-related risks.

AI startup Anthropic also recently warned that its Mythos AI models had developed unprecedented capabilities for identifying vulnerabilities in software systems. To help manage these risks, Anthropic has encouraged partners to share research findings, best practices, and tools built with Mythos across industry, government, media, and the broader public.

Nevertheless, the U.S. government ordered Anthropic to suspend all use of Mythos by foreign nationals, leading the company to disable customer access to many of its systems.
