Contactless Has A Lot of Hype. Is It Warranted?

American Express is offering their cardholders a chance to win gifts that range from $500 gift cards to $5 statement credits. Consumers who register their credit or charge card and spend $25 or more at select online retail locations will be entered to win one of the prizes.

“The Gift Chain is the latest in American Express’ efforts to deliver value to our cardmembers and merchants where they are already connecting – and during the holiday season that is increasingly online,” said Kathleen King, Vice President, Strategic Merchant Marketing at American Express. “At the same time we hope to drive business to our merchants’ retail websites; we are using our Smart Offer technology to add a new element of excitement and reward to our cardmembers’ holiday shopping experience by surprising them with a gift directly after purchase.”

American Express is using its Smart Offer technology to create an interactive retail experience where the consumer is rewarded immediately after the purchase is made. Furthermore, the ability to share these rewards with friends on Facebook lends a social aspect to online shopping that would otherwise be lacking. The enhanced retail experience will encourage consumers to shop at the participating retailers and to use their American Express card, driving business for the network and merchants.
