Belk Expands Digital Gifting Experience with Product eGifting and Digital Gift Cards

Belk department store goes live with new product eGifting and digital gift card ecommerce experiences

Digital gifting has become a core part of modern ecommerce, giving shoppers more flexibility when purchasing gifts online. Whether sending digital gift cards, personalized gifts, or products delivered directly to recipients, consumers increasingly expect convenient gifting options that remove the guesswork from online shopping.

One challenge for gift buyers is uncertainty. They may not know a recipient’s preferred size, color, style, or even shipping address. At the same time, retailers face the costly problem of merchandise returns when gifts don’t match recipients’ preferences. Product eGifting and digital gift cards help solve these challenges by creating a more personalized gifting experience.

Belk recognized this opportunity when it launched new digital gifting capabilities through CashStar. The department store deployed CashStar Consumer to power a branded gift card ecommerce experience and implemented CashStar Product eGifting to allow shoppers to send physical gifts digitally.

CashStar Consumer helps brands like Belk provide unique, branded gift card purchase and recipient experiences. Belk customers can personalize their gifts by selecting from multiple designs and adding custom messages when sending digital gift cards.

CashStar Product eGifting extends the personalized gifting experience by allowing customers to send products without knowing details such as the recipient’s size, preferred color, or shipping address. The gift is delivered digitally by email along with a personal message. Recipients can then customize the gift to match their preferences, select an alternative item, or choose to receive an eGift card equal to the value of the original gift.

This approach addresses one of retail’s ongoing challenges. According to the National Retail Federation, approximately 15% of holiday purchases are returned each year. By allowing recipients to customize gifts before shipment, product eGifting can help reduce merchandise returns while improving customer satisfaction.

Founded in 1888, Belk has built its reputation on customer service and community involvement. The addition of digital gift cards and product eGifting reflects the retailer’s continued focus on creating convenient and customer-centric shopping experiences.

“We’re beyond pleased to expand our relationship with Belk to include consumer digital gifting and Product eGifting,” said David Tate, Senior Vice President at Blackhawk Network, which acquired CashStar in 2017. “Gift cards have always been an important part of Belk’s strategy to keep shoppers returning to their stores. Now, by working with CashStar to launch Product eGifting and digital gift cards, Belk is offering customers new, convenient gifting experiences that live up to its customer-centric brand.”

The launch highlights a broader trend in retail. Modern gifting solutions have evolved beyond traditional gift cards to include personalized product gifting experiences that combine convenience, flexibility, and recipient choice.

For retailers, these gifting solutions create new revenue opportunities while helping reduce returns. For consumers, it simplifies the gift-buying process and increases the likelihood that recipients receive something they truly want.
