Giesecke & Devrient, better known in the U.S. as G&D, has certified a new debit EMV card solution that is compliant with the Durbin Amendment and offers both contact and contactless options:

“The Durbin Amendment posed some challenges to the implementation of EMV debit. G&D was able to meet the required functionality to support acquirer choice at the outset. We are proud to be the first company to offer both contact and Dual Interface debit card products that fully comply with all the requirements of Durbin,” said Scott Marquardt, President of G&D America. “Our market expertise gained through the delivery of nearly two billion EMV cards has enabled us to implement features to optimize flexibility, speed and security.

There are only a few adventurous issuers in the U.S. who are issuing or contemplating issuing a dual contact and contactless chip on a card. Barriers for many issuers include the cost of the chips themselves and the increased complexities in issuance and on-going maintenance. And of course, the fact that NFC terminals that can accept a contactless transaction are far and few between in the U.S., unlike Canada and Western Europe. Those who have taken the time and made the investment to issue dual cards often cite the increased speed and convenience of the transaction and the belief that contactless cards are a bridge to “tap and go” mobile wallets.
