Mobile Payments are Building Momentum but Where is the WOW Moment?

It’s the biggest development in technology since the birth of the Internet and its usage is through the roof. We are talking about mobile. If it’s mobile, it must be big…but what about mobile payments? You’ve heard about it and you know you have to pay attention to it — even though it’s not universally adopted yet.

The ability to make payments from a mobile device or mobile app has been discussed as a game-changer for the payments industry. The adaption to mobile payments not only changes consumer spending habits, but alters the way merchants do business.

According to the latest proximity mobile payments forecast from eMarketer, the total value of mobile payment transactions in the US will grow 210% in 2016. While that growth rate is impressive, the overall amount of mobile payments is still just a drop in the bucket.

So why hasn’t it taken off yet?

Google Wallet, Apple Pay, Samsung Pay and Android Pay are all making big bets in mobile payments. But they are wed to the adoption curve for technology which is an entirely different animal – the payments industry is one that moves at a snail’s pace. The way people pay is not a habit that changes on a dime – there is a “if it ain’t broke, don’t fix it” mentality. Here are the barriers to mobile pay’s growth:
