American Express Launches a Checking Account with Big Rewards

Digital checking accounts continue to reshape consumer banking by combining everyday banking services with rewards, competitive interest rates, and mobile-first experiences. The launch of the American Express Rewards Checking account reflects the growing demand for checking products that offer more value through debit card rewards, digital account management, and fee-free banking.

As financial institutions compete for younger consumers and digitally focused customers, checking accounts are evolving beyond basic transaction services. Features such as contactless debit cards, higher-yield balances, integrated mobile apps, and rewards programs are becoming key differentiators that help banks and fintechs attract and retain account holders.

American Express announced that it has launched a digital checking account with some pretty nice benefits including interest on balances and debit card rewards.  As the operator of a three-party system, American Express is not subject to the Durbin Amendment that regulates debit card interchange, so that helps a bit to make the business case.  Some of the goodies included in this transaction account include:

  • An APY of 0.50%
  • A debit card with contactless capabilities that earns 1 rewards point for every $2 spent on eligible purchases
  • Remote deposit capture
  • No monthly fees or minimum balance
  • Surcharge free ATM access through the MoneyPass network
  • And the ability to manage the account through the American Express app

The account is anticipated to be particularly appealing to Gen Z customers, who may not have or want a credit relationship.

Here’s more from the announcement:

American Express (NYSE: AXP) today launched American Express® Rewards Checking (Amex Rewards Checking), the company’s first all-digital consumer checking account, currently available for eligible U.S. Consumer Card Members. Amex Rewards Checking offers a range of benefits, including Membership Rewards points for eligible Debit Card purchases, an annual percentage yield (APY) rate that is 10 times higher than the national rate1 and Purchase Protection2 for eligible purchases, all with no monthly maintenance fees or minimums and world-class customer service.

“Our Members want more banking products and services from us,” said Eva Reda, Executive Vice President and General Manager, Consumer Banking, American Express. “And they want more from their checking account, without giving up the benefits that are important to them. That’s why we built Amex Rewards Checking to deliver more value for Members with the powerful and trusted backing of American Express. It’s digital checking without compromises.”

The American Express Rewards Checking account illustrates how digital banking is becoming increasingly centered on convenience, rewards, and customer value. By combining competitive checking account features with Membership Rewards and a mobile-first experience, American Express is expanding its consumer banking strategy beyond its traditional credit card business.

As competition in digital banking intensifies, consumers can expect financial institutions to continue enhancing checking accounts with rewards, higher yields, and seamless digital experiences that strengthen customer loyalty and encourage broader banking relationships.
