Murphy USA, operator of gas stations and convenience stores across the United States, has developed MurPay, a mobile payment option at the point of sale. The payment system provides customers with a way to purchase gasoline and convenience store items from any Murphy USA or Murphy Express location. The technology does not require the user to have a credit card however. Rather, customers request payment authorization via text message. They then receive a code to enter at the point of sale to have the purchase price debited from their checking account.
The service can also be used by small businesses in need of a fleet card, but lacking the size required to apply for a corporate credit card. Users can create up to seven sub accounts, each with customized controls for the items that can be purchased, and spending amounts per transaction, day, week, or month.
