PayPal Moves Forward with Mobile Card Reader in Japan

With the help of a strong local partner, PayPal is now making progress in the Japanese market with its mobile card readers.

PayPal said Tuesday that over 2,700 SoftBank retail stores in Japan are now selling its card reader service and thousands of merchants there are using it. PayPal launched its credit card reader, called “PayPal Here,” one year ago – small businesses can connect the device to their mobile device in order to accept credit card payments in person.

PayPal has been pushing its PayPal Here card readers in multiple markets such as the United States, Canada, Hong Kong, and Australia. And it also has an European version of the reader that accepts chip cards.

In Japan, PayPal formed a joint venture with Softbank, a local mobile and Internet giant. The JV has been effective in promoting PayPal’s new products and services. Prior to the JV, PayPal had its share of struggles competing in the local market.
