Everday spend is the sweet spot for most debit card programs and retailers in the commodity purchasing segment, such as gasoline and groceries, are always on the hunt for how to increase incremental spend.

For decoupled debit programs, this market represents the best target and for Tempo, Sheetz is one the largest deals they’ve signed since creating launching their program in 2009.

Will consumers adopt a separate debit card for this everyday spend?

That will depend on the deal, but discounts and cashback doesn’t sound too bad.

Shoppers using the Sheetz Rewards Debit Card for purchases at Sheetz locations will earn discounts on gasoline purchases, as well as cash-back for purchases at millions of other retailers nationwide. Sheetz is using Tempo’s Web-based debit card platform to offer its own branded debit cards and provide a web portal for consumers to apply for and activate cards, as well as track purchases and rewards.
