Relief has been in short supply for consumers facing elevated costs for everything from groceries to housing, and the U.S. auto market is offering little reprieve.

Edmunds reported that the average monthly payment on a financed new car reached a record $787 in Q3 2026, up from $756 a year earlier.

Rising vehicle prices are a key factor, pushing buyers to finance a larger share of their purchases. Borrowing costs add to the burden, with the average new car loan carrying an annual percentage rate (APR) of roughly 7%.

According to Forbes, the combination of higher prices and interest rates has made buying a car increasingly challenging. In response, more buyers are stretching out their loan terms. In Q3, roughly a quarter of financed new automobile purchases involved seven-year loans.

A Longer-Term Strain

Longer loan terms may help keep monthly payments manageable, but they also extend consumers’ debt obligations and can increase the total interest paid. That adds pressure on households already struggling to make ends meet. Credit card debt has continued to reach concerning levels, leaving many consumers reliant on revolving debt.

Some are also turning to buy now, pay later products to cover purchases. But that reliance brings its own risks, especially as more borrowers use these loans to finance essential expenses like rent and utilities.

Making Dollars Count

The pressure extends beyond everyday spending and auto loans. High housing costs and borrowing rates have also made homeownership harder to attain, particularly for first-time buyers. All these factors are contributing to a K-shaped U.S. economy, in which higher-income households fare better while lower- and middle-income households face escalating financial strain.

The auto market reflects this divide. Forbes reported that many new car buyers from households earning six figures, underscoring how rising prices are putting new vehicles out of reach for many consumers. With inflation and interest rates expected to remain elevated, household budgets will continue to face pressure from expenses ranging from housing and groceries to cars and gas.

Even so, consumers are expected to try to keep holiday spending at elevated levels. With budgets stretched, promotions and discounts are likely to play a central role as shoppers look to make every dollar go further.
