Experian’s new ChatGPT-powered credit card app highlights how consumer credit marketplaces are adapting their revenue models for the AI era. For Experian, as well as for platforms such as NerdWallet, CardRates.com, and Credit Karma, AI creates a new way to frame credit card selection, deepen consumer engagement, and potentially expand acquisition economics.

PaymentsJournal has followed this channel since 2018, when Credit Karma’s rise underscored the power of marketplace-driven distribution. The economics remain compelling: consumers typically pay nothing, while issuers fund affiliate programs that can pay marketplaces roughly $100 to $300 for each booked cardholder.

What’s a Credit Card Marketplace?

Credit card marketplaces are an acquisition channel.  Unlike direct mail, where an issuer reaches out to a large block of prescreened candidates or relies on branch applications, credit card marketplaces serve as a consumer hub that helps consumers choose the best credit card for them.

One persistent regulatory issue has been how objective these marketplaces are.  Since the business model relies on fee generation, paid as bounties for new account referrals, sometimes the algorithms improperly route applicants to credit card issuers that reward the month.

The CFPB cited this concern in its Consumer Financial Protection Circular in 2024, alleging “Operators of digital comparison-shopping tools can violate the prohibition on abusive acts or practices if they distort the shopping experience by steering consumers to certain products or services based on remuneration to the operator.”

Where Does Experian Fit in Here?

Experian is a cornerstone company in the consumer credit industry. This $8 billion-revenue company, based in Dublin, operates in 32 countries, and describes its mission in this manner: “We help to redefine lending practices, uncover and prevent fraud, simplify healthcare, deliver digital marketing solutions, and gain deeper insights into the automotive market, all using our unique combination of data, analytics and software.”

In short, Experian is a tech company that, among other things, is one of three credit reporting agencies in the U.S., competing with TransUnion and Equifax.

Experian’s Business-to-Consumer segment contributes 27% of the firm’s revenue, with four channels”

  • Premium subscriptions
  • Marketplace referral and performance-based fees
  • Financial product origination partnerships
  • Value-added protection services

Which brings us to the importance of Experian’s link to ChatGPT.

ChatGPT & Experian

AI typically warns of hallucinations and potential bad data, but here, we got a good response.  ChatGPT suggests that this connection will help Experian move from a consumer credit bureau to an AI financial distribution platform.

This suggestion shifts from a historical model, in which the consumer uses Experian for credit information that a lender uses to scrutinize, to a model in which the consumer uses ChatGPT and enters the Experian data marketplace. This is a potentially great change for Experian, which others will likely copy in the marketplace.

What we see is an interesting change. Credit card issuers are using AI from stem to stern.  Here we see consumers using it to inform their new account decisioning, and expect it will lead to the use of AI on the buy-side for better budget planning, dispute resolution, and throughout their dealings with credit card issuers.
