Gift cards are often associated with special occasions, but consumers are increasingly purchasing them for their own use—and they aren’t letting those funds sit idle for long. The majority of self-use gift cards are redeemed relatively quickly, with 16% used in less than a week, 30% within one to two weeks, and another 29% within a month. That means three-quarters of self-purchased gift cards are redeemed within the first month. Only a small share remain unused for extended periods, suggesting that consumers increasingly view gift cards not as something to save for later, but as a practical payment and budgeting tool for purchases they already intend to make.

About Report

Redemption timing can reveal a great deal about how consumers engage with prepaid gift cards and the brands behind them. Consumers who use their cards sooner often demonstrate different behaviors from those who hold onto their balances, and those patterns can also vary depending on whether a card was received as a gift or purchased for personal use. Understanding these differences can help prepaid programs determine how redemption timing relates to engagement, spending behavior, and future purchase activity.

The research also highlights opportunities for issuers, retailers, processors, and program managers to tailor their strategies to different types of cardholders. Elements ranging from card presentation and merchandising to promotions and digital wallet availability can affect when and how cards are used. By recognizing the behaviors associated with different redemption patterns, prepaid providers can develop more targeted experiences that encourage card usage, strengthen customer relationships, and support continued program growth.
