So, you awoke at 5 AM and headed to Macy’s to take advantage of Black Friday sales. It was probably a good thought but there was no expectation that their card processing system would be in failure mode.
The problem was not in the POS system; clerks could accept cash or the Macy’s private label credit card.

It’s safe to say that customers won’t be the only one annoyed about this mishap.

Black Friday, after all, is still one of their biggest days of the year, sales-wise.

Earlier this morning, Macy’s CEO Jeff Gennette told CNBCthat the holiday season is off to “a strong start” and that the retailer was performing better than it was last year. Perhaps he spoke to soon?
Real time tweets reported angry customers as Macy’s went into contingency, blocking transactions over $100.
More to follow, as Macy’s has yet to make a formal response.
